Wu 武 style Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) was started by Wu Yuxiang (1812-1880) from Guangfu Town, Yongnian prefecture, Hebei province. Wu was a member of an influential family and was well educated.
Wu Yuxiang practiced various martial arts from his childhood. He learned this art first from Yang Luchan (1799-1880), the founder of Yang style, and later from Chen Qinping (1795-1868), who was famous for the small frame variant of Chen family style. It is said that Wu's brother have found a famous theoretical manuscript attributed to Wang Zongue, which bacame the theoretical basis for all schools of Taijiquan. It is quite probable that it was Wu who first used the name Taijiquan - fist of Taiji, inspired by the first line of the Wang Zongyue's manuscript: "Taiji is born from wuji, is mother of yin and yang", and only later it was adapted by other schools.
Li Yiyu (1832-1892), who was Wu's nephew became the main successor of his art. Like his uncle he was also well educated. Both of them, apart from diligent practice, put a lot of effort to developing theory of Taijiquan, writing many texts, which Li collected in a form of a manuscript, with three handwritten copies, known as Three Old Manuscripts.
Hao Weizhen (1842-1920) was most famous of Li Yiyu's students. Wu Yuxiang and Li Yiyu belonged to rich families, and didn't need to make living by teaching this art, they didn't teach many students. Hao Weizhen made it more popular. This is why sometimes this style is called Hao 郝. There several lines coming from the teaching of Hao.
Wu style which we practice comes from Li Yiyu's son Li Xunzhi (1882-1944), who as a child started learning from his father and then continued training with his elder brothers and with Hao Weizhen.
The top students of Li Xunzhi were his son Li Jinfan (1920-1991), Wei Peilin (1913-1961) and Yao Jizu (1917-1998).
The master of our school is Zhai Weichuan, born in 1942. He learned Wu style Taijiquan first from Wei Peilin and then from Yao Jizu. Zhai Weichuan is regarded as one of the top successors of Wu style. He is president of China Yongnian Yu Xiang Tai Chi Chuan Institute, based in the Home Town of The Old Wu style - Guangfu in Yongnian prefecture, Hebei province.
